Caboolture–Bribie Island Road, Bribie Island bridge, design and early works
A business case has been completed, and the project is now progressing through the detailed design phase for the new Bribie Island Bridge
The existing Bribie Island bridge, constructed in 1963, consists of 2 traffic lanes and a narrow pedestrian pathway. The proposal for a new bridge is part of the Queensland Government's strategy to upgrade the Caboolture-Bribie Island Road to a 4-lane standard.
The business case incorporates insights from technical investigations and community consultations, resulting in a concept design for the new bridge. Download the business case summary.
The new bridge will feature 2 eastbound traffic lanes and a dedicated active transport path for bicycle riders, pedestrians, and users of mobility devices. The active transport path on the northern side of the bridge will improve safety and useability and offer uninterrupted views of the iconic Glass House Mountains.
A detailed assessment found the existing bridge structure to be performing well and capable of sustaining traffic for the foreseeable future. The concept design proposes utilising the existing bridge as a traffic asset for 2 westbound traffic lanes.
The plan also includes widening Caboolture-Bribie Island Road to 4 lanes between Bestmann Road East and Benabrow Avenue, as well as realigning the Sylvan Beach Esplanade intersection.
The concept design optimises cost, sustainability, and flexibility by using the existing bridge as a long-term traffic asset. This approach reduces the width, cost, and impact of constructing a new bridge while aligning with the future vision of a 4-lane road.

Key features
New 2-lane, eastbound traffic bridge with road shoulders and separated active transport path.
Existing bridge to provide 2 westbound traffic lanes.
Crossing points on the roads that approach the bridges to transfer traffic between the bridges if required.
Improved resilience through the ability to manage incidents or maintenance by running 2-way traffic on either bridge.
Sylvan Beach Esplanade intersection realigned to provide safer turns.
Widening Caboolture-Bribie Island Road to 4 lanes from Bestmann Road East to Benabrow Avenue.
Installation of traffic signals at Sandstone Point Hotel access.
Active transport path connections on the island and the mainland.
Pelican perches overhanging the water on both bridges.
Funding
This project is a planned investment. The Queensland Government has allocated funding for design and early works.
Investment ID: 3644598
Current status
The project has progressed into the detailed design phase.
The Queensland Government is undertaking a series of investigations and surveys to inform the detailed design of the new bridge. These activities include hydrological and marine surveys within the Pumicestone Passage to assess seabed and waterway conditions.
Further works include geotechnical drilling, on-road and underground service surveys, environmental assessments, and other technical studies.
All works are planned to minimise community disruption, with advance notice provided for upcoming activities and potential impacts.
Throughout the detailed design phase, investigation outcomes, environmental data and engineering analysis will be incorporated into the evolving design. Project updates will be published as new milestones are reached.

Design is progressing for the future duplication of Caboolture-Bribie Island Road from west of Hickey Road to west of King Johns Creek. The project includes signalising the Hickey Road intersection.
Construction to duplicate Caboolture-Bribie Island Road to a 4-lane, dual carriageway from Old Toorbul Point Road to just east of Saint Road has been completed. This included signalising the Volz Road/Browns Road intersection.
