Cairns Southern Access Cycleway, construct cycleway
The Department is progressively delivering a safe off-road facility for bike riders of all abilities, including school children and the bike riding and walking (active transport) community. The new cycleway delivers a direct and continuous route with limited intersections to encourage bike riders to use the off-road facility.
This project will bring important benefits to the active transport community by providing safer connections to several schools, businesses and shopping precincts south of Cairns.
The Cairns Southern Access Cycleway is now open for bike riders between Bana Gindarja Creek in Edmonton to Caleb Shang Bridge in White Rock. This provides a 16km uninterrupted cycleway to Riverstone Road in Gordonvale.
The remaining section of the Cairns Southern Access Cycleway (Caleb Shang Bridge to Ruth Street) is currently in planning and will complete the 20km continuous route from Cairns CBD to Gordonvale.
Currently, there is no funding for construction of the remaining section.
