Gatton–Clifton Road planning, Mount Whitestone
This planning project aims to develop long-term strategies to manage the impacts of a slow-moving landslide at Mount Whitestone.
This road is an important link between the Warrego, New England and Cunningham highways, connecting primary producers and communities in the Lockyer Valley and Darling Downs.
A slow-moving landslide on the west face of Mount Whitestone has been monitored since 2010. The landslide, involving approximately 4 million cubic metres of earth is causing:
- Tension cracks
- Subsidence
- Land surface deformation
These issues are directly affecting the safety and usability of Gatton–Clifton Road.
Benefits
- Improves safety
- Reduces maintenance
Key features
- Understand the importance of Gatton–Clifton Road in a climate of increasing extreme natural events.
- Understand community concerns about long-term connectivity and accessibility for local and regional traffic.
- Mitigating the risks associated with the Mount Whitestone landslide.
- Maintaining the ongoing viability and efficiency of the road network.
Funding
This planning project is fully funded by the Queensland Government through the Transport System Planning Program (QTRIP 2024-25 to 2027-28). Investment ID: 2632962
- Total investment
- $1.03 million
- Queensland Government

Current status
The department is no longer exploring options to realign Gatton–Clifton Road due to the complexity and uncertainty of the landslide. Instead, the focus has shifted to:
- Analysing the social and economic value of maintaining the road.
- Documenting the existing and potential impacts of the landslide.
- Developing strategies to manage the road as part of the local and regional transport network.
