Gympie – Brooloo Road, design active transport crossings
The Queensland Government has developed a preliminary design for active transport bridges and pathways to connect Southside to Gympie's CBD and surrounds.
Design activities for the project were funded under the Active Transport Investment Program, which aims to deliver infrastructure that supports a safe, direct, and connected bike riding network.
The proposed design includes standalone bridges and connected pathways for use by bike riders and pedestrians across the Mary River and Bruce Highway, just north-west of the existing Normanby Bridge.

Current status
Community consultation was undertaken from October to December 2021 to seek feedback on an active transport crossing from Southside into the Gympie CBD to help inform the design of the new active transport facilities.
Overall, there was support for the project, with feedback highlighting concerns regarding the location and height of the active transport crossings.
Alternative locations were considered, but were not aligned with the Principal Cycle Network. The possibility of constructing higher crossings was also explored, however, this was deemed unfeasible due to potential flooding impacts on upstream properties.
The project remains in the preconstruction phase. Further progress, including the completion of outstanding preconstruction activities and construction, is subject to future funding allocations.
