Isis Highway (Biggenden - Coalstoun Lakes), upgrade Biggenden railway crossing

Construction to improve the Isis Highway at Biggenden and remove the ageing timber bridge rail overpass and construct an at-grade road (a new road that will be at the same level as the existing road) is complete.

The 1954 rail overpass was a narrow, timber structure, with axle load and width constraints. High productivity freight transport could not utilise the bridge and its alignment was a safety concern.

The bridge crossed over the disused Mungar–Monto rail line and was the last remaining timber bridge on the Isis Highway. It created visibility and safety issues for motorists, particularly at the Edward Street and Nette Street intersections, which were located at either end of the bridge.

Funding

$7.5 million for detailed design and construction has been fully funded by the Queensland Government through the Regional Economic Futures Fund program, as published in the Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program 2025-26 and 2028-29.

This is due to the project's ability to deliver broader economic benefits, including improvement of freight transport connectivity within the region (such as the Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport and the Port of Bundaberg) to unlock supply chain opportunities for agricultural processing, transportation of components for renewable projects and advanced manufacturing.
