Linkfield Road Overpass upgrade

The Queensland Government is committed to improving road safety, reducing congestion, and supporting the growing needs of the Bald Hills community.

As part of the Bruce Highway Upgrade Program, the Linkfield Road Overpass at the Gympie Arterial Road interchange is undergoing a major upgrade to improve traffic flow and freight access in the Metropolitan Region.

The project will double the overpass capacity by expanding it to four lanes, with two lanes in each direction, and increase the height clearance from 4.7 metres to 6 metres to accommodate high-clearance freight vehicles. To improve traffic flow, the northbound and southbound entry ramps will be upgraded, and the southbound exit ramp will be extended. Traffic signals will also be installed at the northbound and southbound ramp intersections to enhance safety and efficiency.

In addition to these upgrades, the project will improve active transport options by creating a new separated pathway for eastbound pedestrians and cyclists, as well as an on-road cycle lane for westbound cyclists. To streamline delivery and minimise disruptions, the project will be delivered alongside the Gympie Arterial Road and Beams Road intersection upgrade in Carseldine under a single construction contract.

Current status

The project is currently in the pre-construction phase, with early works already underway. These works include:

  • Relocating electrical assets and approximately 350m of an existing gas main.
  • Undertaking earthworks and other site preparation activities.

A major milestone has been achieved with the release of an Expression of Interest (EOI) for a construction contractor.

Construction is expected to commence once the procurement process is finalised and early works are completed.

Community consultation

Community consultation for the project was conducted between 30 April 2021 and 28 May 2021, providing an opportunity for residents to share their feedback, ideas, and concerns.

The final design incorporates community input to address key issues and improve the functionality of the overpass. For more details, you can access the Linkfield Road Overpass Upgrade Community Consultation Summary Report.

Sustainability and Environmental Considerations

The Australian and Queensland governments are committed to managing the project in line with environmental approvals and best practices. Climate resilience and opportunities to manage environmental impacts are being carefully considered during design and construction phases.
