Sunshine Motorway (Mooloolah River to Maroochy River) planning
The department is planning to improve efficiency, capacity and safety on the Sunshine Motorway between the Mooloolah River and the Maroochy River.
Mooloolaba Road, Syd Lingard Drive to Tantula Road West, upgrade intersections
Construction has started on the Mooloolaba Road, Syd Lingard Drive to Tantula Road West intersections upgrade project. This project is designed to improve traffic flow and reduce delays, congestion, and queuing in this busy area.
The project scope was re-assessed to ensure it aligns with longer-term planning for the area. The revised design focuses on targeted upgrades at the Syd Lingard Drive and Tantula Road West intersections, which were identified as key pressure points. By adjusting lane configurations and improving access to Syd Lingard Drive, Sugar Road, Tantula Road West, and the Sunshine Motorway, these improvements will deliver immediate benefits to the local road network.
These improvements will also enhance the operation of the Mooloolaba Road bridge over the Sunshine Motorway, helping to address current traffic challenges while supporting future plans for more comprehensive upgrades.

Key features
- Modify right-turn lanes eastbound on Mooloolaba Road overpass to improve lane utilisation.
- Provide 2 dedicated left-turn lanes from Sugar Road to Mooloolaba Road.
- Widen to provide 2 through lanes westbound from Sugar Road to west of the Syd Lingard Drive intersection .
- Install signalised pedestrian crossings at the Mooloolaba Road and Sugar Road intersection.
- Realign the slip lane on the Sunshine Motorway southbound exit ramp intersection to improve safety.
- Provide a mix of dedicated on-road bike lanes and off-road paths.
- Improve lighting.

This project is a planned investment. The Queensland Government has allocated funding towards upgrading the intersections.

Current status
Construction is now underway. Initial works includes vegetation clearing throughout the project corridor as well as service relocation works. Following completion of these works, main construction activities will commence.
