Mossman – Daintree Road, 2024 Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements reconstruction works

Reconstruction works are underway on a section of Mossman – Daintree Road damaged during ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper.

Disaster recovery is a long-term process and involves an extensive program of works and complex solutions.

A variety of stabilising techniques will be used, including:

  • reinforcing the slopes
  • soil anchoring systems
  • vertical retention piling
  • building rock retaining walls.

These repairs will ensure the road is returned to its fully operational pre-cyclone function.

Benefits

  • Contributes to regional growth
  • Contributes to economy
  • Restores damaged infrastructure

Key features

  • Restoring access for communities and businesses.
  • Restoring damaged roads and road surfaces.
  • Repairing damaged slopes and batters along roads.

Project overview

Reconstruction works will involve stabilisation works below the road.

More than 1,500 linear metres of soil nails and more than 30 concrete piles drilled vertically to depths of more than 15m into the ground to stabilise the downslope hillside.

A combined 30m retaining wall, and a 50m rock gabion wall will also be installed to support the hillside.

On Screen Text: Jeremy, Principal Engineer (Civil)

Jeremy is wearing hi-vis and a hard hat.

He is at the bow of a boat with reconstruction works behind him on Mossman-Daintree Road just above the bank of the Daintree River and below the road level where a landslip occurred.]

So, at this site behind me, we had over 2000 mil of rain in just over six days as part of Cyclone Jasper.

[Timelapse footage of reconstruction works taking from a high above the landslip site. Trucks, crew and heavy machinery move in an out of a benched reconstruction site below the road level which shows significant progress since the initial damage photograph.]

You can see we’re nearly finished the stabilization works, where we've had over 1.5 kilometres of soil nails that have been installed.

So, the next steps here is we're about to start our piling works.

We have 30 piles on the bottom bench and now we start into the works to start to bring this site back up to road level.

[Cars moving through the single lane section of the road between the safety bollards and the rainforest.]

Although you might not be able to see much from the roadway or wonder where the workers are. You can see from this operation behind me how significant this is and how extensive some of our sites are across the Far North Road network.

[A Drill arm attached to a 20-tonne excavator is being moved into position with a crew member operating an elevated platform assisting.]

We're working as quickly as possible in all conditions and trying to get the job done as safely and quickly as possible.

[Wipe cut to heavy rain falling on the crew operating the same drill rig and elevated platform. They have started donning their rain-protection so they can keep working in the inclement weather.]
