North Coast Line Stabling Expansion
We are working with Queensland Rail to expand train stabling facilities across the rail network. Stabling yards are used to park trains when they are not in use.
These stabling upgrades are needed to house New Generation Rollingstock (NGR) trains, the new trains being delivered by the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program (QTMP) and to prepare for Cross River Rail.
By providing additional rail stabling in more strategic locations, Queensland Rail’s network will operate more efficiently, improving services and safety and reducing costs. It will also support future investments such as The Wave – Stages 1 and 2 (Rail).

Current Status
Detailed planning and investigations are underway to increase stabling capacity along the North Coast Line. The Elimbah Stabling Yard has been identified as a proposed site for expansion.
Proposed expansion of Elimbah Stabling Yard
The Elimbah Stabling Yard was constructed in 2017 with eight stabling positions.
The expansion is proposed to progressively deliver up to 24 stabling positions over time, subject to funding and approvals. The initial proposed expansion will utilise land to the north of the existing facility, and future potential expansion areas will utilise land to the east and north-east of the existing facility, between the North Coast Line and Beerburrum Road.
The Elimbah Stabling Yard has been identified as one of the most suitable locations for an expansion on the North Coast Line due to:
- technical assessments identifying that the site provides value for money in relation to construction and operational costs
- availability of suitable land around the existing stabling yard
- the location of the proposed expansion area is positioned away from nearby properties, minimising potential impacts on the local community.
We are undertaking detailed planning and technical investigations for the Elimbah site. This includes identifying ways to avoid or minimise any potential impacts on the environment and local community. Proceeding to construction will depend on the results of these investigations and necessary approvals. If approved, construction is expected to commence in 2027. We will keep the community and stakeholders updated throughout the process.
