Road Asset Management Contracts—North Coast

In April 2024, Fulton Hogan was awarded a 5-year contract to provide routine and programmed maintenance services across North Coast Region.

Under the Road Asset Management Contract (RAMC), Fulton Hogan is responsible for managing the following types of routine and programmed maintenance activities to help support the upkeep of 1381 km of state-controlled roads within North Coast Region:

  • Routine maintenance including patching and pothole repair
  • Programmed maintenance and rehabilitation
  • Minor improvement works
  • Bitumen reseals
  • Minor drainage and culvert maintenance works
  • Asset management services
  • Design and pre-construction services.

Note: Somerset Regional Council maintain the state-controlled roads within its council area for North Coast Region.

It is important to note that to ensure best value for the community, we prioritise maintenance work, with safety issues given the highest priority.

Pothole repairs

Our maintenance contractors regularly inspect roads to identify any potholes and undertake repairs as necessary. Pothole repairs are based on a safety priority, with consideration given to the size of the potholes, their location within traffic lanes, and traffic volumes.

Periods of heavy and extended rain mean potholing is sometimes unavoidable, and after a rain event it can take time for the road to recover from saturation point. Temporary pothole repairs are usually carried out using a cold pre-mix material. A permanent repair involves excavating the pothole and filling it with a hot asphalt mix, which requires the road surface and sub-surface to be completely dry and the fill must be laid in fine weather.

To report a pothole, call 13 19 40 with details of the road, including road name and location of the pothole.

Report a road issue which does not present an immediate danger

To report a general road issue like small potholes, graffiti, streetlighting outages, faded linemarking, fallen signs or overgrown vegetation that may be obscuring visibility or encroaching into roadsides, please visit the QldTraffic website to confirm who owns the road and call or email the listed road owner.

Programmed maintenance (asphalt resurfacing, reseals and pavement rehabilitation)

Specialised design and construction systems are used to ensure the longevity of the road network however, there are instances where sections of road surfaces can suffer severe deterioration. In these instances, the department carries out road rehabilitation works. These works are prioritised based on safety and traffic volumes and are scheduled once funding becomes available.

Programmed maintenance activities are conducted on a periodic basis to ensure the roads remain in a safe and serviceable condition.

When road resurfacing and reseals are planned, there is often a need to carry out pre-treatment works to prepare the road for new surfacing. These pre-treatment works include patching, repairing cracks and smoothing road shoulders and road edges along with activities such as drainage.

Current status

In April 2024, Fulton Hogan was awarded a 5-year contract to undertake routine and programmed maintenance, along with asset management services across North Coast Region.

The RAMC aims to minimise disruption to residents and businesses where possible. In areas with high traffic volumes, maintenance works are generally scheduled at night to minimise the impact on traffic flow and ensure the safety of motorists and roadworkers.

Residents within the immediate vicinity of programmed maintenance works are notified via a letterbox drop and Variable Message Signage (VMS) where possible. For more information about any routine or programmed maintenance works, please call North Coast Region on (07) 5451 7055 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm).
