Veloway 1 (V1) Cycleway, Birdwood Road cycle bridge and approaches

The Veloway 1 (V1) is a dedicated cycleway running between South Brisbane and Slacks Creek.

Several road crossings on the V1 have been identified as opportunities to improve network connectivity and user safety. The Birdwood Road crossing was prioritised for design, as the current alignment includes a footpath, bus stop and traffic lights.

Construction of the Birdwood Road cycle bridge would allow bike riders to avoid the footpath and continue along the V1 without crossing Birdwood Road at the traffic lights. This would reduce interactions between bike riders, pedestrians and motorists.

Motorists would also benefit from fewer interruptions to traffic flow when bike riders cross Birdwood Road at the traffic lights.

Benefits

  • Improves safety
  • Improves network efficiency
  • Increases traffic flow
  • Better active transport
  • Improves ride quality

Key features

  • Improve safety through reduced interactions between bike riders and motorists on Birdwood Road, and between bike riders and pedestrians on the footpath.
  • Improve traffic flow through a reduction in the number of bike riders crossing Birdwood Road at the traffic lights.
  • A more direct and continuous connection for bike riders using the V1.

Funding

This project is a planned investment.

Current status

The design is complete. However, construction of the Birdwood Road cycle bridge remains subject to available funding, market capacity, a sustainable works pipeline, and broader state budget priorities.
