The Wave – Stages 1 and 2 (Rail)

The Wave - Stages 1 and 2 (Rail) will improve travel for Sunshine Coast residents by providing a seamless link to Moreton Bay, Brisbane and beyond. This new rail line will join with the existing North Coast Line just north of Beerwah Station, forming the heavy passenger rail component of The Wave.

The Wave will deliver a new rail line from an upgraded station at Beerwah, with new stations to be built at Bells Creek (Aura), Caloundra, Aroona and Birtinya. These stations will enhance connectivity and accessibility for local communities.

Trains will run through to Moreton Bay and the Brisbane CBD, improving access between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane for passengers travelling in both directions..

The rail line will provide the fastest and most reliable travel option between the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane during peak hours, reducing travel times by over 45 minutes compared to driving in peak times.

The Wave Stage 3 (Metro)

Completing The Wave’s seamless travel experience is Stage 3—A modern transit system between Birtinya and the Sunshine Coast Airport that will link key hubs at Mountain Creek and Maroochydore CBD, offering frequent travel options for residents and visitors.

Stage 3 will introduce a high-frequency, high-capacity public transport service that will reduce congestion, decrease reliance on cars and support the region’s rapid growth. The high-frequency public transport corridor will serve as a transport spine, seamlessly integrating with bus services as the region continues to expand.

By connecting major destinations and offering more efficient travel, it will play a vital role in making the Sunshine Coast more accessible, liveable and future-ready.

Investigations are currently underway.

Mooloolah River Interchange Upgrade

The Mooloolah River Interchange Upgrade is critical to the delivery of The Wave and will address long-standing congestion and safety issues on the Sunshine Motorway. This upgrade will improve connectivity and enable the successful delivery of several major transport projects, including The Wave.

This generational infrastructure will deliver a safer, more efficient and future-ready transport network to meet the region’s growing needs.

Key benefits include:

  • improved network efficiency: Faster and more efficient journeys across the region
  • enhanced connectivity: Better access to key economic, employment, health and residential centres
  • increased safety: Significant reductions in traffic weaving issues and safer conditions for motorists.

Early works for Stage 1 are now underway, including site preparation, clearing, service relocations and geotechnical investigations. Following early works, major earthworks and main construction is due to commence in 2026, weather and construction scheduling permitting.

Construction of the MRI Upgrade will be staged and will continue for several years.
