Improved bike parking at public transport will help bike riders integrate their active and public transport journeys.

Overview

Action 1.21: Develop a bicycle parking strategy in collaboration with key stakeholders to support the planning, delivery and management of appropriately designed bicycle parking across all public transport.

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Achievements

Riding to and from public transport is a sustainable and healthy travel choice for all users.

We talked to existing and potential users of bicycle parking at stations and stakeholders who manage, build and operate bicycle parking, to gather input to help develop a new strategy for bicycle parking at public transport.

Released in 2024 the Bicycle parking at public transport: A strategy for South East Queensland (PDF, 4MB) or (DOC, 3.5MB) identifies 3 priorities to encourage and enable more people to ride to public transport:

  1. planning for consistent delivery of bicycle parking at public transport
  2. building secure and convenient bicycle parking at public transport
  3. encouraging more people to use bicycle parking at public transport.

Next steps

We will work with our planning and delivery partners including Queensland Rail and local governments to implement the strategy through targeted actions in future Queensland Cycling Action Plans.

We will review actions relating to bicycle parking as part of regular updates to the plan every two years, in consultation with stakeholders, and track the strategy's progress in making it easier for more people to choose to ride to public transport.
