Capturing travel time data along key cycling corridors

Travel time data can help people make informed decisions about choosing bike riding over other transport modes.

Overview

Action 2.12: Calculate and compare travel time to key centres by different methods of travel to inform bike riding encouragement initiatives.

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Achievements

Travel time is a key factor used by Queensland residents when deciding their mode of travel. Previous research has suggested that cycling travel times are comparable to other modes over distances of up to 5km.

Information about verified travel times can be a powerful mechanism to encourage the uptake of bike riding at locations where it is faster to travel by bicycle than drive or catch public transport.

In 2022, we conducted a review to assess the suitability of various data collection methods for measuring the travel time of bicycle riders.

Throughout 2022 and 2023, we collected data on the travel speed of bicycle riders and personal mobility device users and analysed how this varies on different infrastructure types.

Next steps

We will use the data collected to inform future infrastructure design and initiatives to encourage people to travel by bicycle and to help validate transport models and datasets that use bicycle travel time data.
