Paving the footpaths of the future
Action 2.7, Action Plan for Walking 2022–2024
Department/Agency: Department of Environment, Science and Innovation
Status: Complete
Work with local governments to increase the uptake of recycled content in new or upgraded footpaths, bikeways, walking tracks and boardwalks and infrastructure such as shade structures, playgrounds and seating.
Overview
Local councils play a key role in building public infrastructure for walking.
They are exploring ways to be more sustainable such as using recycled materials, like crushed glass, instead of new ones, like sand. The Department of Environment, Science and Innovation has supported local councils in these efforts, including for footpaths.
Achievements
The department has supported local councils in creating regional waste management plans. These plans aim to improve waste and recycling in their areas.
Successful and sustainable end markets for recyclables is crucial for boosting recycling efforts. Smart procurement helps councils use more recycled materials in infrastructure projects.
The Recycling and Jobs Fund raises the resource recovery sector's capacity. This ensures a steady local supply of recycled materials that meet council standards.
For instance, Cairns Regional Council uses recycled glass in roads and footpaths. This material is processed at their Material Recovery Facility. It serves as a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to natural sand and aggregate.
Next steps
The department will keep helping local councils to deliver their waste plans.
