Action 3.4, Action Plan for Walking 2022–2024

Department/Agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Deliver physical activity programs in Queensland communities, such as 10,000 Steps, to encourage more people to walk as part of their ‘everyday’.

Overview

During 2022-24, 37,381 Queenslanders logged 29.8 billion steps using the 10,000 Steps program. The program registered 387 new organisations, with over 450 launching team tournaments.

Data showed that 52% of members increased their activity levels six weeks after using the program. This was higher for those who reported zero activity at registration (79%).

Achievements

Funded by Health and Wellbeing Queensland, 10,000 Steps is a free, evidence-based program. It empowers individuals, communities, and workplaces to track steps, set goals, and find ways to be active. The program is accessible to all Queenslanders. People join via interactive web and mobile apps. They benefit from email and phone support from CQUniversity project researchers.

From 2022-24, 37,381 Queenslanders logged 29.8 billion steps. The program registered 387 new organisations. Over 450 organisations launched team tournaments. They create supportive, competitive environments that motivate teams to walk more and log steps. Over half of people using the program reported higher physical activity levels after six weeks.

Technological innovations, including:

  • a new mobile app
  • a statewide steps challenge during Queensland Walks Month
  • a Groups feature
  • an advanced email communication system
  • online articles boosted engagement.

10,000 Steps advocates for improved environments, policies, and activities to connect people with opportunities to be active in their communities. This involves stakeholder engagement, Queensland Walks Board representation, Queensland Walking Alliance contribution, ongoing local government partnerships, and contributions to regional Walking Strategies and Walking Network Plans.

Next steps

Health and Wellbeing Queensland will fund the 10,000 Steps program to 30 June 2025.
