Action 4.3, Action Plan for Walking 2022–2024

Department/Agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Complete

Invest $2.5m between 2021–22 and 2022–23 to deliver initiatives to support walking for transport, health and recreation.

Overview

The Department of Transport and Main Roads allocated $2.5m to improve conditions for people walking. The funds supported the delivery of Walking Local Government Grants, Walking Network Plans on the state-controlled transport network, technical training and guidance, and community advocacy.

Achievements

We have invested $2.5m to improve conditions for walking.

We set up the first Walking Local Government Grants (Action 1.3). We awarded grants to 24 local governments to prepare 49 Walking Network Plans and priority works programs. The local governments are in metropolitan, regional, rural, and remote areas.

The investment funded the department’s walking network planning program. It delivered 11 Walking Network Plans in areas of state interest. It also funded inclusive planning in three locations.

We funded opportunities for people to participate in creating better places to walk in their communities (Action 4.2). Queensland Walks received funding to expand the Queensland Walking Alliance and deliver Queensland Walks Month.

The investment supported us to deliver Walking Infrastructure Masterclasses for transport professionals across the state (Action 3.6).

Next steps

We will continue to prepare rolling two-year action plans. They will implement initiatives in the Queensland Walking Strategy 2019–2029. This is part of our commitment to make walking an easy choice for everyone, every day.
