Australian Defence Force (ADF) implementation

On 26 May 2025, 66 different types of Australian Defence Force (ADF) oversize overmass vehicles transitioned to the National Automated Access System (NAAS) for their road access in Queensland and Tasmania. By entering the specifications of a heavy vehicle and load into the NAAS, an individual tailored network access map containing state and local roads is immediately generated. The map shows all roads where that vehicle can travel safely, including important road access conditions. The online map is ready for instant use for travel, eliminating the need to apply for a permit.

The Queensland Government partnered with the ADF, 24 local governments, 2 port authorities, the national NAAS team, and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator to achieve this milestone. It has delivered much-needed consistency, certainty, transparency, and timely responses, all with a strong customer focus. It also puts Queensland at the forefront as the first mainland jurisdiction to implement the NAAS.

The transition of this ADF vehicle fleet aligns with the productivity and safety reforms under the Heavy Vehicle National Law, which aim to reduce the need for access permits by 90% over 5 years through the implementation of the NAAS.
