Innovation and research
Queensland's transport network supports how we live, work and travel. As our state grows, innovation and research help the Queensland Government deliver safer, more efficient and more resilient infrastructure.
Our work brings together industry, academia and government to find better ways of planning, building and managing Queensland's transport system.
Why innovation and research matter
The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and the broader industry face challenges that require new and better ways of working, including:
- rising delivery costs and productivity pressures
- advances in engineering and digital technology
- increasing resilience and performance expectations
- the need to deliver the Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program (QTRIP) efficiently and effectively.
Research provides the evidence we need to make informed decisions. Innovation helps us apply that evidence to deliver practical, real‑world improvements.
Together, they help us improve safety, reduce costs and extend the life of our assets.
Our approach
We take a practical, outcome‑focused approach that links strategy to delivery:
- adopt proven ideas and adapt them for Queensland's context
- improve productivity, safety and whole‑of‑life performance
- manage risk using evidence and expert review
- scale successful innovations into standard practice.
All innovations must be safe, evidence‑based, cost‑effective and scalable across our network.
Innovation in practice
TMR has developed a framework for turning ideas into real‑world solutions. Through this framework we:
- support research and development for early‑stage ideas
- run trials and demonstrations on QTRIP projects
- assess feasibility, risk and value through expert review
- adopt mature, proven solutions into everyday delivery.
We focus on early planning and design stages, where innovation has the greatest impact.
Our research focus
TMR invests in targeted research to improve transport outcomes across Queensland. Focus areas include:
- materials and pavement performance
- engineering methods and standards
- digital, automation and data
- asset lifecycle planning and management
- sustainability and resilience.
Research evidence informs standards, project decisions and innovation adoption.
Working with partners
We collaborate with industry and research organisations to identify, test and adopt better solutions. Partners include:
- National Assets Centre of Excellence (NACOE)
- Transport Academic Partnership (TAP)
- Austroads
- industry partners, suppliers and technical experts.
Looking ahead
By aligning research, innovation and project delivery, TMR is building an infrastructure system that is more efficient, resilient and future‑ready. We will continue to work with partners to scale what works and deliver better outcomes for Queensland.
