Brisbane Valley Highway Safety Program
The Queensland Government is delivering a targeted program of works to improve safety and travel conditions along the Brisbane Valley Highway.
The Brisbane Valley Highway upgrade intersections project is part of the South East Queensland (SEQ) City Deal—an agreement between the Australian Government, Queensland Government, and Somerset Regional Council. This project aims to enhance connectivity and safety along the Brisbane Valley Highway, a critical freight and commuter corridor linking Somerset with Greater SEQ.
With increasing traffic volumes, the highway has seen a rise in intersection crashes. This project will deliver targeted safety improvements to reduce crash risks, improve traffic flow, and support the region’s long-term growth and connectivity.
The project focus is on upgrading high-risk intersections along the highway with low-cost, high-impact treatments such as left and right turn lanes. These improvements aim to:
The initial priority intersections includes:
Key features include installing left and right turn treatments, pavement strengthening and/or resurfacing at priority intersections to reduce rear-end and angle crashes and improve ride quality. These safety improvements will also improve sight distances and enable safer turning movements for all road users.
The Brisbane Valley Highway upgrade intersections project is being delivered under the SEQ City Deal, with contributions from the Australian Government and Somerset Regional Council.

Design is progressing on priority intersections in Fernvale and Toogoolawah.
The Queensland Government, in partnership with the Australian Government and Somerset Regional Council, is taking action to make the Brisbane Valley Highway safer for everyone who travels through the region.
Thanks to the SEQ City Deal, the Department of Transport and Main Roads will deliver targeted upgrades to high-risk intersections between Ipswich and Toogoolawah. These improvements are designed to reduce crashes, improve traffic flow, and make everyday journeys safer for locals and visitors alike.
The priority intersections were selected based on crash data, traffic volumes, and community feedback received from the Somerset community via Council. Local knowledge has played a key role in identifying the areas that need attention most.
Fernvale and Toogoolawah are leading the way with design work already underway for safety improvements at key intersections. These upgrades will make it easier and safer for residents to move around town and connect with the highway.
The design phase for these projects is expected to be completed this year, paving the way for construction to begin in 2026.
Beyond Toogoolawah, we are committed to improving other high-priority intersections along the Brisbane Valley Highway. These safety improvements will support the region’s growth and ensure safer travel for all road users—from school buses and farm vehicles to families and freight.
