Planning is now underway for the next phase of upgrades to improve safety along the Brisbane Valley Highway.
Planning
The Brisbane Valley Highway upgrade intersections project is part of the South East Queensland (SEQ) City Deal—an agreement between the Australian Government, Queensland Government, and Somerset Regional Council. This project aims to enhance connectivity and safety along the Brisbane Valley Highway, a critical freight and commuter corridor linking Somerset with Greater SEQ.
With increasing traffic volumes, the highway has seen a rise in intersection crashes. This project will deliver targeted safety improvements to reduce crash risks, improve traffic flow, and support the region’s long-term growth and connectivity.
The Queensland Government is delivering a targeted program of works to improve safety and travel conditions along the Brisbane Valley Highway.
Passing through Fernvale, Esk, Toogoolawah, and Harlin and spanning 89.5km between the Warrego and D’Aguilar highways, the highway is a key commuter corridor supporting freight, tourism, and local communities.
The Brisbane Valley Highway Safety Program is supported through commitments from the Australian Government, Queensland Government, and Somerset Regional Council.
Assessment of the corridor has identified investment opportunities in five key areas:
Pavement strengthening near Ottaba commenced in early 2026, and design is progressing for safety improvements at priority intersections including Forest Hill–Fernvale Road at Fernvale and Dingyarra Street and Mount Beppo Road intersections at Toogoolawah.
The Australian Government committed additional funds to improve the Brisbane Valley Highway in February 2025. The process of prioritising the allocation of these funds is currently underway.
Visit the project webpages for more information on these activities.
