Overview

Action 4.1: Invest $14 million between 2017–18 and 2020–21 through the Rail Trail Local Government Grants program to develop, deliver and manage rail trails in partnership with local governments on disused rail corridors.

Lead agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads

Status: Carried forward to Queensland Cycling Action Plan 2023-2025

Achievements

We committed $14 million to support local governments to plan, design and deliver rail trails on disused rail corridors including:

  • $9.5 million to construct Bundaberg to Gin Gin stages 2 and 3 (currently in planning)
  • $2.1 million for 18 feasibility studies for rail trails from the Gold Coast to Far North Queensland.

Next steps

Completion of this action has been carried forward to Action 4.1 in the Queensland Cycling Action Plan 2023-2025.

Through this action, we will continue to support local governments within the remaining funding, to plan, design and construct rail trails on disused rail corridors to increase regional trail riding experiences and associated economic opportunities.
