National Level Crossing Safety Program
In 2024–25, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has prioritised key work plan actions developed at the National Level Crossing Safety Roundtable held on 6 March 2024 in Brisbane. These actions aim to reduce the incidence of fatalities and injuries across Australia's level crossings as outlined in the National Level Crossing Safety Strategy 2023–2032 commissioned by the National Level Crossing Safety Committee.
Chaired by TMR's Director-General, the National Level Crossing Safety Committee, and a purposefully established Industry Reference Group, met in August, September, and November 2024, and January, April, and May 2025 to advance Vision Zero–Zero Harm at Australia's level crossings.
The National Level Crossing Safety Program Management Office, established in TMR, is driving delivery of the national work program, and, in particular, leading or co-leading work on numerous projects.
Projects in delivery include:
- a TMR-led program using new-generation technology to detect level crossing driver infringements.
- a national education and awareness program focusing on safe driving at level crossings.
- improving level crossing metadata consistency and accessibility.
Delivered projects included:
- rail industry adoption of the new Level Crossings and Train Visibility Code of Practice
- level crossing location data inclusion in transport route planners and in-vehicle telematics
- a review of Interface Agreement effectiveness and level crossing penalties.
