The Department of Families, Seniors, Disability Services and Child Safety (the department) funds the Queensland Disability Advocacy Program. It advocates for the rights of people with disability to fully participate in the community, including physical access.

The department also funds the Queensland Disability Peak and Representative Bodies Program. It advocates for the inclusion of Queenslanders with disability, their families, and carers.

Achievements

From 1 January 2022, the department started funding the Queensland Disability Advocacy Program. It advocates for the rights of people with disability. The program enables them to enjoy full participation in the community, including physical access. This helps to meet the needs of people with disability in our communities.

Between July 2022 and December 2023, the program provided 1,616 hours of advocacy services relating to help with:

  • physical and mobility access
  • physical activity and wellbeing
  • transport
  • equipment
  • aids.

The funded organisations supported 132 people with 474 instances of service provision. Of these:

  • 14 were First Nations people
  • 35 were from other cultures or spoke a language other than English.

People with physical disabilities were the second highest group using Queensland Disability Advocacy Program services.

Pathways is a statewide advocacy phone support and referral service. It is delivered under the Queensland Disability Advocacy Program. It provided 41 hours of service to 43 people between July 2022 and December 2023 relating to help with:

  • community inclusion
  • participation
  • access
  • including physical and mobility access
  • physical activity and wellbeing
  • transport
  • equipment
  • aids.

The Queensland Disability Peak and Representative Bodies Program also started delivering services from 1 July 2022. It provides information, support, and referral services for people with disability, their families, and carers. The program supported 35,731 Queenslanders and made 14,000 referrals between July 2022 and December 2023.
