Planning for walking at Brisbane 2032
Action 1.2, Action Plan for Walking 2022–2024
Department/Agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads
Status: Long-term
Ensure the Queensland Government’s whole-of-games operational and legacy planning for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games promotes strong active transport outcomes
Overview
The department has developed tools for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. They assess transport strategies to promote sustainable transport, like walking. They also affect planning for accessibility and active transport in new builds and major upgrades.
Achievements
We aim for high public and active transport use for those attending the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games venues, as spectators or workers.
We are also dedicated to delivering a highly accessible Games transport experience for people of all ages and abilities.
We have been key stakeholders in planning for legacy venues linked to the Olympics and Paralympics. We are developing tools to assess effectiveness of transport strategies for the Games. They should encourage more people to use sustainable modes, like walking. This includes transport to and from events, and between venues for different events on the same day.
We are working with the Games Venue Legacy Delivery Authority, the Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning, the Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee, and local governments. Our goal is to improve planning for accessibility and active transport in new builds and major upgrades. We have applied this approach to all applicable Games venues across Queensland.
Next steps
We will monitor these outcomes in the long term. We will use data collected before, during, and after the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
