Walking to public transport
Action 1.8, Action Plan for Walking 2022–2024
Department/Agency: Department of Transport and Main Roads
Status: Complete
Develop precinct transport plans to ensure quality walking and bike riding connections around targeted public transport nodes.
Overview
The Department of Transport and Main Roads and Brisbane City Council prepared the Chermside Principal Activity Centre precinct plan. This plan sets a framework for future development.
We also prepared the Chermside Walking Network Plan, which identifies ways to better connect the area. It will guide detailed planning and design. Locals benefit from improved walkability and public transport access.
Achievements
Chermside is a key bus interchange on Brisbane’s northside. Located on a busy road, it connects locals to everyday destinations like:
- regional shopping centre
- hospital
- library
- sports facilities
- high-density housing.
We developed the Chermside Principal Activity Centre precinct plan with Brisbane City Council. The plan outlines how we can better connect public transport and key destinations. It also sets the framework for future development.
We also prepared the Chermside Walking Network Plan. It shows the primary and secondary routes for walking within 2km of the bus interchange.
We engaged with representatives from:
- Metro North Health
- Craigslea State School
- community groups.
They shared their experience of walking around the area.
Community input helped us find ways to better connect Chermside. We seek comfortable, direct, safe, and accessible routes. This will guide planning and supported by future works programs.
Next steps
The Principal Activity Centre precinct plan will guide detailed planning and design. The Walking Network Plan will be put into action as funding becomes available.
