Project story: Brisbane City Council, Safe School Travel Infrastructure – Coorparoo State School

Submitted by Brisbane City Council.

Brisbane City Council delivered Safe School Travel Infrastructure improvements near Coorparoo State School at the intersection of Halstead Street and Cavendish Road in Coorparoo. The intersection is within a school zone and in proximity to the school entry/exits, a supervised children’s crossing, passenger loading zones and bus stops. Halstead Street links to Cavendish Road that accommodates over 14,000 vehicles per day and provides connection for the school precinct and low, medium and high-density residential areas.

Safety concerns at the intersection were raised in relation to pedestrian and vehicle movements. Following a review of the intersection utilising crash history, traffic survey data, stakeholder engagement, and design investigations, council identified treatments to enhance safety and accessibility for all road users through:

  • installing a pedestrian splitter island with associated signs and line marking, including yellow ‘No Stopping’ lines
  • relocating a loading zone at the intersection
  • upgrading kerb ramps and sections of footpath
  • completing minor turfing

Safety and accessibility improvements included:

  • providing a dedicated crossing point for school students, their families and the wider community
  • improving visibility at the intersection for all road users
  • improving traffic delineation and reducing corner cutting to encourage slower and safer vehicle movements.

The project provides benefits for all road users at the intersection, improving pedestrian access and safety and making the crossing task easier while encouraging students and pedestrians to cross at a designated location and promoting slower vehicle movements. The project supports a safe, accessible and connected transport network linking schools and other activity centres to employment and public transport hubs.

Construction started in mid-September 2024 and was completed in early-October 2024, with joint funding between council and the Queensland Government through the TIDS.

Project story: Brisbane City Council, Kitchener Road, Kedron – road rehabilitation and resurfacing

Submitted by Brisbane City Council.

Kitchener Road, Kedron from Webster Street to Gympie Road (Ch 0 to Ch 1247).

Brisbane City Council is committed to making our roads smoother and safer for all road users. By investing in roads across Brisbane, the council ensure the city’s transport network continues to deliver better roads for road users.

Kitchener Road, Kedron from Webster Street to Gympie Road is approximately
1247m long heavily trafficked arterial road and a bus route. The subject section has an undulating grade with a low point at chainage 900.

Various commercial and industrial establishments are located along the northern side of the road.

The existing surfacing is primarily a 22-year-old asphalt.

Pavement defects predominantly consisted of depressions, rutting, stripping, failed patching, and potholes at multiple locations along the subject section. Moderate to heavy crocodile cracking with depression can be observed most predominantly along both the inside and outside. Severe asphalt stripping is found along the bus stop deceleration lane along the westbound carriageway between chainage 600–625.

Surface defects predominantly consisted of longitudinal and transverse cracking at multiple locations along the subject section. The parking lanes are generally in an acceptable condition and hence only a cosmetic resurfacing was required.

The improvements to the section of road involved:

  • selective reconstruction of trafficked lanes and failed section with
    70mm–90mm Type 4 multigrade asphalt
  • application of one coat bitumen seal
  • resurfacing of the entire area with a minimum 60mm Type 3 multigrade asphalt overlay.

The project provides benefits for all road users, with a smoother road surface and lower vehicle operating cost.

Construction was undertaken by an external contractor on a cart and lay basis with asphalt supply by the council. Construction started 4 July 2024 and completed on 16 July 2024.
