Project story: Mackay Regional Council, Paradise Street and Webberley Street intersection signalisation

Submitted by Jay Rosenberg, Principal Infrastructure Planner, Mackay Regional Council.

The Paradise and Webberley Street intersection is a key intersection in the Mackay transport network, linking East Mackay, West Mackay and Paget with the Bruce Highway and the northern areas of Mackay.

The project included the upgrade of the previous priority-controlled intersection to a signalised intersection with additional lane capacity on Paradise Street, on-road bicycle lanes, new pathway connections and crossing facilities. Other significant works were also undertaken to relocate underground services and stormwater drainage infrastructure.

The upgrade not only provides additional vehicle capacity at the intersection to cater for future traffic growth but greatly improves safety for all road users, particularly for pedestrians and cyclists through provision of signalised and priority crossing facilities and improved connectivity.

The delivery of the project was impacted significantly by wet weather, with almost four months of lost time over the duration of the project. This resulted in significant delivery delays and project cost increase.

Project story: Whitsunday Regional Council, Renwick Road (Gardenia Street to Stanbury Street) shared path

Submitted by David Thompson, Manager Transport and Drainage Assets, Whitsunday Regional Council.

The project involves the construction of an off-road shared path on Renwick Road, Proserpine from Gardenia Street to Stanbury Street (1.065km length).

Renwick Road forms an essential part of the Proserpine active transport network, servicing three schools, Keith Johns Estate Park and residential areas. The footpath section was listed as a high priority on the Principal Cycle Network Plan.

The project aims to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists by widening the existing concrete footpaths to between 3m to 3.5m wide, as well as:

  • the construction of raised priority pedestrian crossings on Carnation St, Fuljames St, Keith Johns Dr and Stanbury St utilising yellow coloured surface treatment in accordance with AS 1742.10:2024 and the DTMR Technical Guideline, Raised priority crossings for pedestrians and cycle paths January 2019
  • enclosing an existing, parallel open drain
  • fencing at the Proserpine State School drop off area to guide safe pedestrian movements
  • pedestrian refuge traffic island at the school crossing
  • solar powered sensor lights at the new crossings.
