Project story: Gladstone Regional Council, Turkey Beach Road south of Gladstone – safety improvements
Submitted by Adam Tull, Project Manager, Gladstone Regional Council.
Turkey Beach Road is an important council-controlled Local Road of Regional Significance. It is a two-way, single carriageway road that is approximately 22km long, which primarily provides access to the town of Turkey Beach (eastern extent) from the Bruce Highway (western extent). Turkey Beach Road is approximately 45km south of Gladstone.
The vertical and horizontal geometry of the road is generally poor with several intersections and property accesses located along the length of the road. Following a Road Safety Audit that identified several safety issues, TIDS funding within the
2023–24 and 2024–25 Gladstone RRTG works programs was allocated to implement the recommended safety improvements. During 2024–25, council’s internal construction crews successfully completed the remaining two realignment works packages identified as “R2” and “R3” within the design documentation. The “R1” and “R4” works had been completed in 2023–24.
The R2 and R3 works were scheduled to occur last, in 2024–25, noting that each of these packages required the acquisition of small parcels of land to enable improvements to the road geometry. The land acquisition triggered minor adjustments to fencing and property gates and council worked collaboratively with affected landowners to complete these adjustments. Once these arrangements were in place, works onsite proceeded and included:
- horizontal and vertical realignment
- shoulder widening
- improved roadside drainage and culvert capacity
- road resurfacing.
All works were performed by council internal construction crews who benefitted greatly from the opportunity to work on the one project for several months at a time, honing their technical skills in both planning and delivery of significant road improvements. These are skills very different to those required for basic road maintenance or resheeting projects.
